Dr Mia Farr - Veterinarian

Dr Mia Farr BVSc

Veterinarian

Dr Mia Farr qualified in June 2000 from Onderstepoort. From there she worked in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Botswana. She has a keen interest in animal welfare and has spent 7 years working at various animal welfare societies where she developed an interest in surgery.

In her search to improve her skills as a vet she enrolled and completed a certificate in veterinary acupuncture through the Chi Institute of Florida. She is passionate about integrating her skills as a western medical practitioner with complementary medicine such as acupuncture and herbal medicine.

Dr Angelique Smit - Veterinarian

Dr Angelique Smit BVSc

Veterinarian

After I qualified as a Veterinarian, I moved to Klerksdorp and had my own Practice there for 28 years. I then got the opportunity to Work in England for 14 years as a veterinarian. I moved to Hermanus in 2018 and practiced there for another 2 years and today I am incredibly happy to be a part of the Animal Matters Veterinary Hospital Team.

I graduated from Onderstepoort, the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Pretoria in November 2002, so I can hardly believe that I have been in practice for over 20 years already.

As a young vet, I worked at several practices in South Africa and in the United Kingdom before moving to Somerset West in 2005. I also completed the North American Veterinary Licencing Exam in April 2006.  I got married in 2013, my husband is Schalk Smit. It did cause some confusion changing from Dr Smith to Dr Smit J. I have worked at several practices in the Helderberg Basin since 2005 as well as at the Animal Research Facility of the Department of Physiological Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences of Stellenbosch University.

I am pleased to now be a member of the amazing team at Animal Matters Veterinary Hospital. I joined the team to work as a veterinarian in January 2023. It is a pleasure to work with pets, who are much more than pets, but more fur-babies in our clients’ homes. These fur-babies are part of our homes and families for up to 18 years (and in some cases even longer). As a Veterinarian, it is a great reward to be playing a small role in ensuring that this special human-animal bond is a long lasting one.

I am also an avid runner. This includes both road running and trail running. I feel that it is very important to have a good work-life balance and I also feel that a healthy body is home to a healthy mind.

Animal Matters Veterinary Hospital has an amazing team (It is so good, it deserves to be mentioned twice). They all strive to serve the community of Somerset West, and the fur-babies to the best of their ability. Here you will find an abundance of care, compassion and always a warm welcome.

Veterinarian

I graduated with my BVSc from the University of Pretoria in 2022 and completed my CCS year in Limpopo in 2023. After that, I returned to my hometown of Somerset West. I love treating pets of all shapes and sizes, and I have a particular interest in internal medicine and managing chronic conditions. At home, my partner and I share our lives with two feline fur babies, Lizzy and Rose. When I’m not at work, you can usually find me baking, sewing, or hiking.

Danica Bagley

Veterinary Nurse

I qualified as a veterinary nurse from Onderstepoort in 2019. Since then I’ve been working at various welfare organisations. My favourite animals to work with are dogs, cats and exotics! One of my biggest passions is working with people within our community, educating them on proper animal care and wellbeing. In my free time I enjoy horse riding, reading and painting. I hope to one day have the opportunity to study veterinary overseas.

With years of experience in the veterinary industry, my lifelong love for animals has truly shaped my career. Growing up with dogs, birds, and even worms, I developed a deep appreciation for all creatures. I find veterinary medicine endlessly fascinating, and I love that I get to learn something new every day.

HR and Administration

For as long as I can remember, animals and the beauty of nature have held a special place in my heart. From volunteering at SPCAs to dreaming of working alongside veterinary professionals, my path has always been guided by a deep desire to care for and protect those who cannot speak for themselves.

I lead with compassion, kindness, and a quiet strength—always ready to offer a helping hand, whether to an animal in need or a soul in distress. One day, I hope to take this passion even further by becoming a veterinary nurse, where I can dedicate myself fully to the healing and wellbeing of animals.

This isn’t just a dream—it’s the very heart of who I am.
